30/30 DAY 12--Consider the Source
April 12, 2016
There will be people who do not understand what you do and, even worse, will try to tell you that you cannot make a living at your practice. When a naysayer is telling you that you should stick to your 9-5 job, my advice to you is to consider the source of that advice. Chances are it is someone who does not love the work they do. Chances are it is someone who has never gone for their dream--or, if they did, they were unable to make it happen. I am pretty sure you would never hear someone who is doing what they love try to talk you out of doing what YOU love!
I heard a cute comment recently. It was " Some people don't like it when you stand up because it draws attention to the fact that they are still sitting". When we go for our dreams, there will be people who will try to stop us. But the reason they try to stop us is that they themselves are unhappy and misery loves company. They do not want to be reminded that they have been unable , or unwilling, to follow their own dreams. And it is far easier to try and talk someone else of out of doing so then to actually be accountable, take action and get out of a rut!
What does this have to do with finding clients? Well, if you are vulnerable to other people's opinions and you have people around you saying it can't be done, you may give up before you even start. Or, you may interpret some lean days as your business is just getting started as an indication that they are right!
it takes time to develop a thriving practice. But it CAN be done. It is possible to make money doing something that you love. If you have no one in your life that supports you or if you have no example of someone who has been successful doing what they love to turn to---use ME! I believe you can do it. And I am living proof.
Surround yourself with people who believe in what you do. look for people who are making a good living doing what they love. Read underdog stories and rags to riches biographies. Walk away from the haters and when someone tries to poop all over your dreams, have a good long look at them. Are THEY happy? Are they doing what they love? If not, they are not an authority on what is possible. Look for an advocate and don't take advice from someone who lets their own fear keep them from being bigger than they are.
