30/30 DAY 26-- Form a Vision and Run Everything Through that Filter
April 26, 2016
It is really easy to get overwhelmed by all of the options that we have for marketing as well as all of the directions that your practice could go in.
And when we are overwhelmed we tend to not do anything. I call this “chasing chickens”—I see one chicken and go chasing after it but before I catch it, I see another chicken and go running in that directions. And there are so many chickens I could run all day and never catch one of them!
For example, in my practice as a hypnotherapist, there are many different ways I could market. I can presentations, radio, social media, run groups or retreats and teach or try to do workshops through my community center.
And with many things on the agenda to get done, it’s so overwhelming to tackle even one of them. Hence, chasing chickens.
So, I think it’s really important that have a clear vision for your practice and where you would like it to go. And then choose the daily activities, marketing effort and projects based on that vision. For example, I am drawn to do more workshops and teaching and I have a long range plan of having my own talk radio show. Therefore, the marketing efforts and project that make the most sense to me are teaching, blog talk radio, pursuing radio spots, and finding opportunities to speak to classes andrun workshops.
This way when an opportunity comes or a marketing idea occurs to me, I can compare it to my long-range plans and goals and decide whether it’s a fit. We can be presented with a lot of opportunities and sometimes the most challenging task is paring them down to the ones that will give the biggest payoff.
So, take time to really think about where you would like your practice to be in a year or five or ten. What are your wildest dreams for your practice? Write it down. Then work backwards from there and choose the marketing efforts and projects that match the best to your long term vision.
Every time I do a blog talk radio show I am getting practice being on radio for my long term dream of being a talk radio host. And if I never realize that dream, at least I got a taste of it hosting my own small show.
